About

The Living Northwest Trail is Woodland Park Zoo's answer to the question every Seattle parent eventually asks: what if the zoo focused on animals my kid might actually encounter in Washington State?

Located along the northern section of the zoo, the trail winds past habitats for river otters, gray wolves, cougars, mountain goats, and bald eagles — the Pacific Northwest's greatest hits in animal form. For kids who've grown up hearing about salmon runs and spotting eagles over Puget Sound, seeing these animals up close at the zoo hits differently than the zoo's African or tropical sections.

The river otter habitat is the trail's undeniable highlight. Two or three otters are almost always active during morning and midday hours, doing their characteristic spinning dives and wrestling with each other in ways that are frankly more entertaining than most animal exhibits at any zoo. My 5-year-old has watched them for 20 straight minutes on multiple visits.

The wolf exhibit is the most dramatic. Woodland Park's wolf pack occupies a large forested habitat that gives them room to actually behave like wolves — pacing, socializing, and occasionally howling. On select weekends, the zoo holds wolf howling demonstrations where staff teach visitors the vocalizations and the wolves respond. It's genuinely impressive.

Practical notes: the trail is part of Woodland Park Zoo's general admission — no separate ticket. It's fully outdoor and uncovered, so it's best on dry days. Morning hours (9:30-11:30 AM) give you the most active animals before afternoon heat drives them to shade. Zoo membership pays for itself in 2-3 visits if you're in the area regularly.

Why Kids Love It

The Living Northwest Trail focuses on animals native to the Pacific Northwest — river otters, wolves, cougars, and bald eagles — which makes the whole experience feel like a field guide come to life. Kids love that these are animals they might actually spot in Washington someday. The river otter habitat is the highlight: the otters are incredibly active, spinning and diving in a way that holds attention better than any big-game animal at the main zoo.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • The river otter habitat is on the left as you enter the trail — go there first before afternoon feeding times
  • Wolf howling demonstrations happen on select weekends — check the zoo schedule before you go
  • The trail connects to the broader Woodland Park Zoo, so plan it as one stop in a full zoo day
  • Bring binoculars for the bald eagle exhibit — they're elevated and hard to see detail without them
  • The trail is open-air — bring sunscreen in summer and rain gear for shoulder seasons

What to Bring
