How to choose road-trip stops with kids
Plan breaks before the hard stretch
A good stop comes before everyone is done, not after. For younger kids, look for a real movement break every 2 to 3 hours, with bathrooms and food close enough that the stop does not become a second detour.
Match the stop to the drive day
Short drive days can handle a museum or zoo. Long drive days usually need faster wins: indoor play, a shaded playground, a casual meal, or a 45-minute energy burn near the route.
Keep one indoor backup per city
Weather is harder to work around when the car is already packed. When a route includes outdoor stops, open the linked city guide and save at least one indoor backup before you leave.
Check pass value only when it fits
Attraction passes can help when a city has several paid stops on the same route, but they are not automatically cheaper. Compare direct prices, child ages, blackout dates, and how much time you really have.
