Buenos Aires runs on a later clock than most North American families are used to, and the easiest planning win is leaning into it: late breakfasts, big lunches, a serious afternoon siesta, and dinner at 8 or 9 with the locals. El Ateneo Grand Splendid is the bookstore (a converted theater) every kid stops in their tracks for; even toddlers register the painted ceiling. Palermo is the neighborhood you base in for a family stay: the parks, the rosedal, the planetarium, and ice cream at Rapanui or Heladeria Cadore are within a 20-minute stroller loop. Espacio Gotán and Artistica Rubens are the two creative studios that take walk-in families for short workshops; book ahead in summer. Distribuidora Petoys, off the radar of most guidebooks, is the toy shop locals send out-of-town grandparents to for unusual finds. Tigre Delta is the day trip worth the train ride for kids 5 and up. The water-bus and stilt-house geography lands differently for kids than the city's grid. Pro tip: cash is still king in many family cafes and panaderias. Pull pesos in larger chunks at a Western Union or a Banco Galicia ATM rather than at airport rates.
