Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)

OMSI gives each age group a distinct way to explore science. Science Playground is designed for children from birth through age 6, with an infants-only crawling area, water experiments, climbing structures, animal dress-up play, storytime, and a Discovery Lab. Children ages 4 to 8 can explore the Curium, while the wider Turbine Hall invites families to build, test, and improve solutions using wind, water, and shake tables.

Teens ages 13 to 18 have their own space called The Mezz. Natural sciences, paleontology, chemistry, physics, and life-science labs add more focused activities for children ready to slow down and ask questions.

A half-day is a sensible starting plan, but OMSI can fill most of a day when a family adds a planetarium program, an Empirical Theater screening, a USS Blueback submarine visit, or the current featured exhibition. Those specialty experiences require separate tickets. Science Playground is included with museum admission, but its official page warns that it is often at capacity.

Weekday afternoons are usually quietest there. Strollers must normally be parked outside the playground, although they are welcome in most other museum areas. Quiet nursing rooms, family restrooms, snack areas, bottle-filling stations, extra diapers, and wipes are available in family-focused spaces.

Current general admission is $22. 50 for visitors 14 and older, $15. 50 for ages 3 to 13, and free for children under 3.

Every visitor still needs a ticket. Families driving should budget for OMSI's paid lots, currently $5 plus fees for two hours or $8 plus fees for all-day parking. MAX, bus, and Portland Streetcar connections serve the OMSI/SE Water Avenue station.

Theory Restaurant serves a published children's menu, while Empirical Café provides another on-site option. OMSI is an excellent rainy-day choice because the principal exhibits and labs are indoors. Check the live calendar before visiting because museum hours, laboratory schedules, temporary exhibitions, and ticketed programs can change.
