Pittock Mansion

Pittock Mansion combines a furnished historic home, Portland history, gardens, and a hilltop viewpoint. The 16,000-square-foot French Renaissance-style house was completed in 1914 and contains 23 rooms. Children can look for features that once seemed highly modern, including central heating, indirect electric lighting, a refrigerator room, a central vacuum system, and an elevator.

The house's curved rooms, wooden floors, staircase, furniture, and family objects make the past easier to picture than a display case alone.

General admission is self-guided and includes the mansion, Gate Lodge, and current special exhibit. School programs range from 45 to 90 minutes and connect the property with life in the early 1900s, which makes ages 7 to 14 a particularly strong fit. Younger children may enjoy the rooms and gardens but must stay close to an adult.

Visitors may not touch objects, roughhouse, eat, or drink through most of the house. Everyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Families should understand the stroller rule before arriving. Strollers cannot tour the mansion because interior space is limited. A first-come stroller check may be available, but a baby carrier is the more dependable choice.

The building is only partly accessible for mobility needs. Its staff-operated historic elevator accepts manual wheelchairs, and two loaner wheelchairs may be available on a first-come basis.

Allow about 1.5 to 2.5 hours for the mansion, Gate Lodge, exhibit, and outdoor grounds. The public park, gardens, paved paths, and viewpoint are free, while museum admission is paid. On a clear day, the viewpoint can include Portland and several Cascade peaks. Rain does not ruin the indoor museum portion, but clouds may hide the view and wet weather reduces the appeal of the grounds.

Parking is a major arrival friction point. The museum warns that spaces may be limited during June through August and November through December. Some seasonal periods also use managed paid parking. Current admission is $17 for adults, $14 for ages 6 to 18, and free for children under six. There is no on-site restaurant, only light snacks in the store, so plan a meal elsewhere.
