Oregon Rail Heritage Center

Oregon Rail Heritage Center is a working museum where children can stand close to Portland's large historic locomotives and see how rail equipment is preserved. The 20,000-square-foot Enginehouse protects three major steam locomotives: Southern Pacific 4449, Spokane, Portland and Seattle 700, and Union Pacific 3203. Families can also see vintage railcars, visual and hands-on rail exhibits, an operating machine shop and the historic Brooklyn Turntable in the outdoor entrance plaza.

A museum-only visit usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Ages 3 to 12 are the strongest fit because the engines provide an immediate wow factor, while labels and machinery give older children more to study. The center is open Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.

m. Admission is $6 for ages 14 and older, $4 for ages 3 to 13, and free for children under 3. A family with two adults and two children ages 3 to 13 would pay $20.

Seniors, military visitors, members and SNAP recipients may qualify for posted discounts.

Train rides are separate experiences and are not included with museum admission. However, museum admission is included when a family buys excursion tickets. Weekend rides run seasonally, and special trips use their own dates and prices.

Riders must check in 20 minutes before departure. Historic passenger cars require seven steps and an 85-foot walk to a seat; strollers and mobility devices cannot go aboard, though temporary storage is available in the center.

The Enginehouse makes this a good rainy-day choice, but the turntable plaza and boarding areas add outdoor exposure. Free parking is under the Highway 99 viaduct across the MAX tracks. Freight trains can block Central Eastside crossings and cause long delays, so consult the official parking map or arrive by MAX, bus or Portland Streetcar.

The center is ADA-compliant and has restrooms. Water, soft drinks and light snacks are sold inside, but families should plan a full meal elsewhere.
