Fort Morgan State Historic Site

Fort Morgan is a large historic military site at Mobile Point, about 22 miles west of central Gulf Shores. The drive ends at a fortification that has guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay since 1834. Families can walk through the brick fort, examine concrete artillery batteries built from 1895 to 1904, visit a museum covering Mobile Point's military history from 1814 to 1945, and view the exteriors of later military buildings.

The official history also explains that enslaved African American masons were among the skilled workers who built the fort, giving parents an important opportunity to discuss who constructed historic landmarks and whose stories are remembered.

This is strongest for children ages 7 and older who enjoy forts, ships, engineering, birds, or American history. Much of the appeal comes from moving through real spaces and imagining how the site worked, rather than from children's play equipment. The grounds are also an important spring and fall stopover for migrating birds, so binoculars can add a nature-study layer to the visit.

Allow roughly two to three hours to see both the museum and outdoor structures without rushing.

The fort and grounds are open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, while the museum operates from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The site closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Admission is $8 per adult, $5 for ages 6 to 18, and $20 for an official family-of-four ticket covering two adults and two children.

Advance tickets are available. Military discounts are also published, but families should bring qualifying identification and check current terms.

Most of the visit is outdoors or in historic structures, so it is not an ideal rainy-day activity. Bring water, sun protection, weather layers, and sturdy shoes. The museum, restrooms, and ground level of the fort are accessible, but the official page does not claim that every historic area is accessible.

That makes stroller use limited, especially around stairs or uneven sections. Nursing, changing, and child-food facilities were not confirmed. Check the forecast and official page before committing to the long drive.
