The playground itself is well-maintained and appropriate for toddlers through kids around 12, with equipment that spans age groups reasonably well. But the playground is almost a warm-up act for Lake Shelby — the freshwater lake that sits right next to it. Lake Shelby's calm, clear water is significantly gentler than Gulf surf, making it the preferred swimming spot for families with toddlers, non-swimmers, or kids who find ocean waves intimidating.

A designated swimming area with lifeguard coverage during peak season adds an extra layer of safety.

The combination is the whole point: kids play on the equipment, then cool off in the lake, then maybe come back for more playground, then swim again.
