Wormsloe State Historic Site

Wormsloe State Historic Site combines Savannah history with a mostly outdoor nature outing. Families begin along the long live-oak avenue, then can use a shuttle, visit a small museum, walk to tabby ruins, and continue toward the Colonial Life Area and marsh. The official site also lists gravesites, birding, geocaching, a picnic area, and seven miles of nature trails.

During programs and special events, historical interpreters may demonstrate tools and skills from colonial Georgia.

The strongest age fit is about 5 to 14, when children can walk part of the trail and understand that ruins and artifacts are clues to the past. Younger children can enjoy the trees, shuttle, and open space, while older children can explore the site's more layered history. The state describes Wormsloe as a place shaped by Native American, African, and European inhabitants.

Ranger-led school programs also examine the original fortified home, family burial ground, and an Indigenous shell midden.

Plan about 1.5 to 3 hours for a regular family visit. Shuttles leave the visitor center every 30 minutes at the top and bottom of the hour. The ride lasts about 20 minutes, and visitors may get off at the museum to explore at their own pace. The interpretive route used by field trips is about 0.8 mile, while additional trails can make the outing much longer.

Weather matters. Heat, humidity, rain, and insects can affect the trails, so a cool, dry morning is usually the easiest choice. The official pages do not state a stroller policy. A sturdy stroller may work for some portions, but a carrier is safer for uneven natural surfaces. Nursing and changing facilities are not described.

The site is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Admission is charged even for children under six. Families using a taxi or car service should note the operator's warning that the museum and trails are roughly one mile from the front entrance.
