Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden

The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden gives families an outdoor art experience with enough movement to keep children involved. The approximately 11-acre garden sits beside the New Orleans Museum of Art in City Park. Winding paths pass mature live oaks, magnolias, pines, two lagoons, bridges, lawns, and more than 90 sculptures.

Children can look for towering figures, bright colors, reflections, unusual materials, and shapes that change as they walk around them.

The strongest fit is preschoolers through tweens, but all ages are welcome. Babies and toddlers can ride in a stroller, and NOMA identifies the meandering paths as stroller and wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs are available at the main entrance upon request.

Younger children still need close supervision. The garden is an outdoor museum, so running, climbing, touching sculptures, and horseplay are not allowed. NOMA specifically recommends holding hands with the youngest and fastest children.

Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for a relaxed loop with stops at favorite pieces. A downloaded map can turn the visit into a simple art hunt and help prevent aimless wandering. Benches are placed around the garden, but picnics are not allowed. Café NOMA is inside the adjacent museum, although the official pages do not confirm a children's menu or whether museum admission is needed to reach the café.

Admission to the garden is free, with donations appreciated. It is open seven days a week, using longer hours from April through September and shorter hours from October through March. Because the entire attraction is outdoors, rain, lightning, summer heat, and humidity can shorten the visit.

Morning is usually the most practical family window in warm months. Bring water, sun protection, and insect repellent, and keep children close beside the lagoons and bridges.
