New Orleans Pharmacy Museum

The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum is a compact historic museum inside an early nineteenth-century pharmacy and residence on Chartres Street. It is a better match for curious school-age children than for preschoolers. The museum plainly says that children are welcome, but it does not have interactive exhibits or displays made especially for them.

Children who can read labels and see inside the cases are most likely to stay interested.

The collection gives families plenty to discuss. First-floor topics include a soda fountain, perfumes and cosmetics, patent medicines, prescriptions, surgical instruments, anesthetics, questionable medical practices, and a courtyard garden. Upstairs, families can explore subjects such as midwifery, homeopathy, medicine bottles, spectacles, and the history of African American pharmacy in New Orleans.

Some medical objects and historical subjects may be uncomfortable for sensitive children, so previewing the exhibit list is wise.

Self-guided visits run Tuesday through Saturday and do not require advance reservations. The museum says most visitors spend 45 minutes to one hour, while its visitor page recommends allowing about 90 minutes to see everything. Guided tours last a little over an hour and must be booked ahead. Sunday access is limited to the advance-booked morning tour.

Most exhibits are indoors, making this a useful rainy-day stop, although the courtyard adds a small outdoor portion. Arrival needs planning. The museum has no visitor parking and notes limited metered spaces plus nearby paid lots.

The main entrance is level with the sidewalk, but there is no elevator to the second floor. Reaching those galleries requires two flights totaling 37 steps. A stroller may work on the first floor, but the official site does not publish a stroller policy, and carrying one upstairs could be difficult.

Hours can change during peak season. Check the official visitor page before leaving, especially for weekend guided-tour availability. Families should also plan meals elsewhere because the official pages do not describe an on-site cafe or snack service.
