Maui with kids comes down to three planning calls, not twenty.

You are deciding how much beach time you want, whether your family should do the Road to Hana at all, and whether Haleakala National Park is a sunrise mission or a sunset one. If you get those three right, Maui is easier than parents fear. If you get them wrong, the whole trip starts to feel like logistics in a swimsuit.

Haleakala National Park is the marquee outing and the place I would send the visiting cousin first, but here is my mild heresy: sunset is usually the better family play. m. 5 to 2 hour drive in the dark from Kahului. Sunset skips the reservation stress and gives you the same moon-surface drama.

Family of four is about $30 per vehicle, visit time is usually 3 to 6 hours for sunrise or 2 to 4 for daytime, and there is no food or water at the summit. The recurring note in parent reviews is to treat the cold seriously. Layers, headlamps, snacks, real water, not just one half-empty bottle in the car door.
