Pāpalaua Wayside Park

Papalaua Wayside Park is a roadside beach along Highway 30 between west Maui (Lahaina/Ka'anapali) and south Maui (Kihei/Wailea). It's not really a 'park' in the traditional sense — it's a pull-off area with a strip of sandy beach and ocean access.

What makes it worthwhile for families is the simplicity. You pull off the highway, walk a few feet, and you're on a quiet beach. No resort crowds, no vendors, no noise. Kids love the feeling of discovering their own private beach, and on calm days, the sand is soft and the waves are gentle enough for wading.

A few important caveats: this is a completely undeveloped beach. No food, no real facilities (occasionally portable toilets), no shade structures, no lifeguards. You bring everything or you have nothing. Ocean conditions vary — some days the waves are gentle and the water is inviting, other days it's too rough for kids. Check conditions before committing to a swim.

Security note: break-ins at pull-off beaches in Maui aren't uncommon. Don't leave valuables visible in your car. Bring what you need and lock everything else in the trunk.

The best use case is as a quick beach stop while driving between west and south Maui. If you're driving from Lahaina to Kihei or vice versa, pulling over for 30-60 minutes of beach time is a nice way to break up the drive.
