USS Constitution Museum

Set inside Building 22 in the Charlestown Navy Yard, the USS Constitution Museum turns the story of "Old Ironsides" into an active family visit. The museum is separate from the Navy-operated ship, so families can visit the indoor galleries even when they do not have time or the right identification for the ship. The museum is open daily, apart from listed holiday closures, and uses suggested admission rather than one fixed ticket price.

The strongest fit is for children about ages 5 to 12, though the museum says its hands-on exhibits are for visitors of all ages. In All Hands on Deck, children can take on parts of an 1812 sailor's job, including scrubbing a deck, balancing as if aloft, and trying to furl a sail. Other galleries use artifacts, photographs, art, and personal stories to explain how the ship was built, fought in the War of 1812, traveled in peacetime, and became a national symbol.

History-minded teens can slow down for the timelines and source-based stories, while younger children can move between physical activities.

Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for the museum. A separate ship visit can make the outing longer. Adults who plan to board USS Constitution need federal or state photo identification, and every visitor passes through a security screening. The ship is first come, first served and has different hours from the museum.

This is a dependable rainy-day choice because the museum galleries are indoors. Both exhibit floors are accessible to wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, and strollers. Families must check in at the admission desk, and food and drinks are not allowed in the exhibits.

Public transportation is often simpler than driving. The museum recommends the water shuttle, subway, bus, or walking route, and it offers parking validation for the nearby Nautica Garage.
