Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum

Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum is a one-hour guided performance and museum tour, not a drop-in gallery. A costumed colonial host leads each timed group through meeting spaces, replica tea ships and interactive exhibits. Children can join the story, board a vessel and throw imitation tea into Boston Harbor.

The route also includes talking portraits, film elements and the Robinson Tea Chest, described by the museum as the only known surviving chest from the Boston Tea Party.

The format works best for children around 6-14 who can follow a continuous story and stay with a group. History-focused teens may enjoy it too. Infants and toddlers are a tougher fit because the tour lasts a full hour, seating is limited and strollers cannot enter the museum, gift shop or tea room.

A dedicated stroller parking area sits beside the ticket booth, but the museum does not accept responsibility for stored property.

Timing matters. Every ticket has a specific tour time, and doors open 15 minutes before it. Guests must check in between 15 and 5 minutes before the listed time. Late tickets can be reassigned. The museum holds some walk-up inventory, but its official planning page warns that summer and holiday waits can reach an hour or more. Buying ahead is the safer choice.

The experience includes indoor rooms, gangways and open-air ship decks. That mix makes it less dependable during heavy rain or harsh winter weather than a fully indoor museum. The building has an elevator, and the ship Eleanor has ramp access to its top deck.

Only one of the two ships is fully accessible, so visitors who need that route should contact the museum and book a tour beginning at the top or bottom of the hour.

After the tour, Abigail’s Tea Room offers a practical rest. Families can sample the five historic teas or buy sandwiches, salads, soup, chowder and baked goods. A museum ticket is not required for the tea room.
