Boston Children's Museum is built for active, hands-on play rather than quiet viewing. Children can climb, pretend, build, make art and test ideas across three floors. The New Balance Foundation Climb gives children a three-story route-finding challenge.

The strongest age range is about 1 to 10. Babies and toddlers have a protected PlaySpace for children from birth through age 3, including a shoes-off baby area and equipment for climbing, balancing and sensory play. Older siblings are not currently allowed in PlaySpace, so a family with a toddler and an older child may need two adults.
Big kids and younger tweens can still enjoy the climber, design challenges and art spaces, but teens may find most exhibits too young.
The museum's ticketing guidance says the average visit is about two hours. It recommends visiting during the 9:00 AM-12:00 PM or 1:00-4:00 PM windows because some spaces may close briefly around midday for staff breaks. Advance reservations are especially useful on weekends, holidays, school vacation weeks and $1 Sunday afternoons.
This is a strong rainy-day choice. Most activities are indoors, and the building has elevators, lockers, a coatroom and child- and adult-size loaner wheelchairs. Strollers are allowed, but parking space for them is limited and some exhibits cannot accommodate one. The museum recommends a smaller umbrella stroller when possible.
Baby changing tables are available in every restroom. Caregivers may nurse or pump wherever they are comfortable, and PlaySpace has a private area. Families may bring snacks or lunch, but food and drink are limited to designated indoor eating areas or Milk Bottle Plaza outside.
Parking is the main arrival problem. The museum does not own a garage, nearby parking can cost $25-$45 and validation requires a physical garage ticket. South Station is about a three-block walk, making public transportation a practical option.
