About

UMLAUF Sculpture Garden + Museum combines an outdoor sculpture garden with a smaller indoor gallery near Zilker Park and Barton Springs. The official visitor page says most visits last from 30 minutes to an hour and a half. That compact size makes it useful for a shorter family outing, especially when children aren't ready for a long traditional art museum.

The garden gives children room to walk between sculptures, look for animals and people in the artwork and compare bronze with stone. Outdoor bronze sculptures have been prepared for gentle touching, mainly to support visitors who are blind or have low vision. Stone sculptures may not be touched, indoor gallery works are hands-off and climbing any sculpture is prohibited.

Review these rules before entering with young children.

The strongest child-focused visit is Family Day, held on the second Sunday of each month from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The official site lists sculpture searches, art-making, performances and community partners, with free admission for everyone. Sculpture Garden Tour + Storytime and other family programs also appear on the calendar.

Regular admission is $8 for adults, $2 for K-12 students and free for ages 0 to 4. Families with an EBT card and photo ID receive free Museums for All admission.

The garden's paved gravel trail is wheelchair accessible, and one wheelchair is available first come, first served. A stroller policy isn't posted, so families using one should call if trail conditions are a concern. The on-site parking lot is limited. Officially listed overflow choices include Wright Field across Azie Morton Road and nearby Zilker lots.

This isn't a strong rainy-day destination because much of the experience is outside. Go near opening on a mild day, bring sun protection and allow children time to complete a sculpture search. Food and drinks aren't permitted, so plan snacks for before or after the visit. No nursing room or baby-changing facility is identified in the official visitor information.

Plan Your Visit

Best Time to Visit

Visit near opening on a mild Tuesday through Friday. Choose the second Sunday for free Family Day activities, but expect more families.

Wait Times

No admission wait estimate is published. The small on-site parking lot may add arrival time when it is full.

Nearby Food

Food and drinks are not permitted at UMLAUF. The official visitor page does not list nearby restaurants, so plan a meal before or after the visit and check current Zilker-area options separately.

Why Kids Love It

Children can follow sculpture searches, spot animals and people in the artwork, gently touch approved outdoor bronzes and make art during monthly Family Day.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Explain the touch rule before entering. Outdoor bronze sculptures may be touched gently, but stone sculptures and indoor gallery works may not be touched.
  • Do not let children climb on any sculpture. The museum states that climbing is strictly prohibited.
  • The on-site lot is limited. Overflow parking may be available across Azie Morton at Wright Field or in nearby Zilker lots.
  • Bring weather protection. Most of the signature experience is outdoors, and food and drinks aren't permitted inside the museum or garden.
