About
The Texas Military Forces Museum works best for children who stop to study full-size tanks, aircraft and field equipment. Its indoor galleries cover the 36th Infantry Division, the Pacific theater of World War II, the Cold War, the Texas Air National Guard, armor and artillery. The official site also lists outdoor displays.
Plan about 1. 5 to 2. 5 hours for a family visit; younger children may move faster, while readers and military-history fans can stay longer.
Regular admission is free, and no reservation is listed for a normal museum day. The main friction is getting onto Camp Mabry. Use 3038 West 35th Street for GPS, enter from Maintenance Drive, then follow signs to Building 6.
Every adult must carry a valid, unexpired photo ID. The museum currently says foreign visitors are not permitted on Camp Mabry, and security may search vehicles. Call before traveling if anyone in the group may not meet the entry rules.
Most of the visit is indoors, so it can work on a rainy or very hot Austin day. Outdoor vehicles add weather exposure, and the museum can close when Austin Independent School District closes for bad weather or when military officials direct a closure. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The site says the outdoor exhibits are available year-round.
A normal visit is mainly looking, reading and talking together. Event formats are different. A July 2026 Hands on History program let visitors enter certain historic vehicles and warned of long lines.
The November 7 and 8, 2026 Close Assault program includes weapon-firing demonstrations. These events can be exciting for older children but loud for noise-sensitive kids. Check the event calendar before choosing a date.
Food and drink are not allowed inside; official group guidance says picnic areas and restrooms are available outside.

Why Kids Love It
Children can stand close to full-size tanks, aircraft, artillery and other military equipment. Selected living-history events add vehicle access and demonstrations.
