Mexic-Arte Museum

Mexic-Arte Museum is a compact downtown Austin museum focused on traditional and contemporary Mexican, Mexican American, Latinx, and Chicanx art. It sits at the corner of Fifth Street and Congress Avenue. A regular family visit is mainly gallery-based: children look closely at changing exhibitions, compare colors and materials, and talk about the cultural stories behind each work.

Guided tours can be tailored for K-12 groups and are available in English or Spanish by arrangement.

The most hands-on choice is a scheduled Family Day. The museum describes these selected Sunday programs as a chance for visitors of all ages to view the current exhibition and then create art with a participating artist. Family Days are free, and materials are provided. They do not happen every Sunday, so check the current events calendar before promising children an art activity.

Regular admission is affordable. Adults pay $8, students and seniors pay $5, and children age 12 or younger pay $1. Admission is free for everyone on Sunday. A Monday-Saturday visit for two adults and two children age 12 or younger would cost $18 before parking. Tickets cannot be purchased online and must be bought at the Museum Store desk.

Parking creates more friction than admission. Street parking is listed at $2.40 per hour during posted periods. The museum also advertises four hours at the Frost Bank Tower Garage for $10, but families must follow license-plate and QR-code steps to receive the discount. Nearby bus routes 801 and 803 and the Downtown MetroRail station provide alternatives.

Plan 60 to 90 minutes for a regular visit. The museum is indoors and works well in rain or heat. Food, drinks, and backpacks are prohibited in the galleries, so pack lightly and schedule snacks outside the visit. Check current exhibitions and events before arriving because content, programs, and holiday schedules can change.
