High Museum of Art

High Museum of Art works best when a family chooses one main goal before entering. Families with children from infancy through age 8 can start in the Greene Family Learning Gallery. Its CREATE and EXPERIENCE areas combine hands-on art, digital elements, quiet spaces and areas for babies and toddlers.

Elementary children can use free Explorer Cards to look closely at one artwork and complete related activities. Teens have their own art afternoons, camps and special events.

The official family planner supports anything from a one-hour stop to a half-day or full day. A short visit might pair one exhibition with an Explorer Card. With three or four hours, add the learning gallery, lunch and a scheduled family activity.

Children still need to follow normal art-museum rules in the collection galleries, including staying back from objects and using only dry materials such as pencils or crayons for sketching.

Regular admission is $23. 50 before applicable fees, while children 5 and younger enter free. General tickets include the collection and most special exhibitions, but certain exhibitions and events require separate tickets.

UPS Second Sunday offers free admission and family programming. It also draws large crowds, and the Greene Family Learning Gallery closes during that event. A regular weekday morning is the simpler choice for families that care more about play-space access than free admission.

Arrival needs planning. The museum is across from MARTA's Arts Center Station. The Woodruff Arts Center garage costs $18 for a typical weekday visit and $25 on nights or weekends, and weekend spaces can fill. Reserve parking when a major event or exhibition is scheduled.

Parents get useful support inside. Permanent galleries allow standard baby strollers, though large jogging strollers and wagons are prohibited. A private nursing room has comfortable seating, children's books and a changing table.

Baby-changing stations are also available in museum restrooms. For food, CJ's Café has light meals and snacks, Refuge Coffee is across the piazza and packed lunches may be eaten outside. This makes the High a strong rainy-day choice without forcing every age into the same activity.
