The easiest family tool is the museum's Eye Spy activity. Children search the galleries for objects that may include art, furniture, pottery, sculpture and toys. The museum also tells visitors to ask about current interactive kids' activities.

A five-year-old may focus on colors, faces and funny shapes, while older children can compare how an object was made or used. Teens who like art, design or history can go deeper without the visit feeling built only for small children.

The museums are open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and are fully indoors, making this one of Colonial Williamsburg's more dependable choices during rain, high heat or a cold afternoon. Plan 90 minutes for a quick family visit. Two to three hours works better if children complete the Eye Spy hunt, stop to draw or want to inspect both collections closely.

The Museum Café gives families an on-site lunch option, including an official children's menu for ages 10 and under. Admission to these galleries is free, but café food, store purchases and other Colonial Williamsburg buildings or programs may cost extra.
