Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center occupies a modest space on St. Petersburg's waterfront but delivers an outsized experience through the quality of its touch tanks and the passion of its staff. The touch tanks are the center's signature feature. Live horseshoe crabs and stingrays in shallow, accessible tanks let children handle marine animals directly under staff supervision. Horseshoe crabs are ancient, alien-looking creatures that are harmless to handle but completely fascinating — their underside anatomy, crab-like legs, and general prehistoric quality captivate kids ages 2-12 consistently.

Stingrays glide through the touch tank and can be touched on the back (barb is trimmed for safety) — the texture and movement create tactile memories that last.
