Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield is one of the most genuinely magical family experiences in the St. Louis area.

The centerpiece is a tropical conservatory housing hundreds of free-flying butterflies from dozens of species — and walking through it is a completely different experience than viewing butterflies behind glass. The butterflies land on visitors freely, attracted to bright colors and slow movement, and young children in particular find the experience deeply enchanting.

The conservatory is warm year-round (it maintains tropical conditions regardless of Missouri weather), which makes the Butterfly House a uniquely appealing cold-weather option — the contrast of entering a warm, lush, butterfly-filled space on a gray January day is genuinely delightful. It's one of the few truly excellent indoor nature experiences in the region.

Practical tips that significantly affect the quality of your visit: wear bright colors, particularly red, orange, and yellow. Butterflies are strongly attracted to these colors, and visitors wearing them consistently report far more landings than those in darker clothing. Moving slowly and holding your arm out stationary is the most reliable technique for getting a butterfly to land on you.
