About
Lone Elk Park is one of the St. Louis region's hidden gems and one of the best free family activities within 30 miles of the city. This St.
Louis County park features a drive-through wildlife area where American elk, bison, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey roam freely alongside the park road — and the encounters can be extraordinary. Elk the size of horses occasionally stop traffic by simply standing in the road; bison graze in open meadows visible from the car.
The experience is fundamentally different from a zoo visit. These aren't animals in enclosures — they're free-ranging wildlife in a managed natural setting, and the encounters carry the unpredictability and immediacy of a real wildlife experience. When an elk turns from grazing and walks directly toward your car to investigate, kids experience something that no zoo exhibit can replicate.
Seasonality significantly affects the quality of a visit. Early morning and late afternoon are reliably the best times for wildlife activity regardless of season. But fall — particularly September through November — is the peak experience for Lone Elk: the elk rut brings dramatic behavioral displays, including the iconic bugling calls that carry across the park and can be heard before the animals are even visible.
Driving through Lone Elk on a cool October morning with bugling elk audible in the woods is a remarkable family memory.
Practical notes: drive slowly (5–10 mph throughout the park), stay in your vehicle when wildlife is close, and treat road crossings by large animals with appropriate caution. The park road is not long, but moving slowly and stopping for good wildlife sightings means a full visit takes 45–90 minutes.
The World Bird Sanctuary is a 5-minute drive away — combining both makes for an excellent free wildlife half-day.

Why Kids Love It
Lone Elk Park is a free drive-through St. Louis County park where wild elk, bison, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey roam freely alongside the road. Kids press their faces to the car window as full-size elk walk within feet of the vehicle — a wildlife encounter that requires no zoo ticket or admission charge.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Early morning (first hour after sunrise) and late afternoon (last 2 hours before sunset) are when elk and bison are most active and visible near the road
- Fall (September–November) is the best season — elk rut means bugling elk and dramatically active behavior
- Drive slowly (5–10 mph) — wildlife may step onto the road without warning; treat it like a safari drive
- Roll down windows rather than using zoom — the experience of hearing and smelling the elk nearby is part of the magic
- Combine with the World Bird Sanctuary (5 minutes away) for a full free wildlife half-day
What to Bring
- Camera or phone with zoom
