About
Shaw Nature Reserve is an extension of the Missouri Botanical Garden, situated about 45 minutes west of St. Louis near Gray Summit. At 2,400 acres, it's a proper nature reserve — not a manicured park, but a managed landscape of grassland prairies, oak-hickory woodlands, Ozark border habitats, wetlands, and the Meramec River bottomlands.
For families who want a genuine outdoor adventure rather than a playground visit, Shaw is one of the best options within reasonable driving distance of St. Louis.
The reserve has 15 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy level paths to moderate terrain with creek crossings. The marquee seasonal experience is the spring wildflower trail — from roughly late March through May, the reserve's wildflower areas produce spectacular blooms including thousands of trout lilies, spring beauties, Virginia bluebells, wild phlox, and later in the season, coneflowers and black-eyed Susans. The spring wildflower display is legitimately one of the best in the midwest and worth planning a specific visit around.
Wildlife is abundant: deer are commonly spotted in the early morning and evening, turtles sun on logs along the wetland trails, frogs and toads are audible and visible throughout warm months, and the birding is exceptional — particularly during spring migration when warblers, tanagers, and other migrants move through.
For families, the practical considerations are that this is a real outdoor hike, not a paved park walk. Toddlers under 3–4 need carrying for longer sections; school-age kids who are comfortable walking 2–4 miles handle it well. Wear appropriate shoes (boots are better than sneakers after rain), bring water and snacks, and take a trail map at the entrance.
Missouri Botanical Garden members get free admission to Shaw — a meaningful benefit that adds value to garden membership for outdoor-inclined St. Louis families.
