About

The Saint Louis Zoo is one of the most extraordinary free public resources in the United States: a world-class zoological park with over 18,000 animals across 500+ species, entirely free to enter. It's one of only a handful of accredited major zoos in the country that charges no admission, and for families visiting St. Louis, it's an automatic priority.

The zoo spans 90 acres inside Forest Park and is divided into distinct habitat zones: the African Savanna (lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos), River's Edge (hippos, cheetahs, Asian elephants), the Big Cat Country (tigers, leopards), Sea Lion Sound (daily feeding shows), Penguin & Puffin Coast (underwater viewing panels are breathtaking), Primate House, Insectarium, Bird House, and more. With young kids, a full visit across all major zones takes 4–6 hours at a comfortable pace.

The Penguin & Puffin Coast exhibit deserves special mention: the underwater viewing panels let kids press their face to the glass while penguins and puffins swim literally inches away. It's one of those exhibits that creates a lasting memory, and it's consistently the most-photographed spot in the zoo.

Practical planning: summer mornings at the zoo are the gold standard. Arrive by 8:30–9am before the heat peaks and crowds build. Animals are most active in the early morning hours, and you'll be done with the major exhibits before noon. Bring packed food and use the abundant picnic areas — dining at the zoo's on-site restaurants is an option but can get expensive for a family.

Parking in the zoo's dedicated lots costs $15–$17. Free parking is available throughout Forest Park, and the zoo is walkable from multiple Forest Park lots if you're comfortable with a 5–10 minute walk. A zoo membership is excellent value for St. Louis families who visit more than twice a year.

Why Kids Love It

The Saint Louis Zoo is consistently ranked among the top 5 zoos in the US, and it's entirely free to enter — a fact that still surprises visitors. Kids love the big cats, the sea lion feeding demonstrations, the penguin exhibit where you can watch them swim level with your face, and the Sea Horse habitat in the new River's Edge. The scale is massive enough that each visit feels different.
