Saint Louis Art Museum

Saint Louis Art Museum makes a museum day easy to try because general admission is free. The collection spans many cultures and time periods, and families can choose a few rooms instead of trying to cover the whole building. Main exhibitions may require tickets, but admission to those exhibitions is free on Friday. The museum stays open until 9:00 PM that day.

Children have several ways to do more than look. Free Find Activity Cards prompt drawing, writing, movement and imagination in the galleries. Family Sundays add a themed gallery search and hands-on art project on scheduled Sunday afternoons.

Wee Weekends combine play, stories, museum walks and art making for ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers. That program is free but requires registration. Art Quest resources are designed for ages 6 to 12, while teen programs give older children a separate path into the museum.

Strollers are welcome, though they may be restricted in the shops. Free loaners are available at Welcome Desks. Front-worn child carriers are allowed, but back carriers must be checked and wagons are prohibited.

Restrooms with changing stations are available, and the museum identifies accessible family restrooms. A dedicated nursing room is not listed, so the combined nursing and changing amenity is rated limited.

A focused family visit can last about 90 minutes. Allow two to three hours when adding an art program, lunch or the outdoor sculpture garden. The indoor galleries make this a strong rainy-day plan, while the sculpture garden offers a useful outdoor break when the weather is comfortable.

Two free public lots sit across Fine Arts Drive. The underground garage costs $15 from March through October and $10 from November through February. Accessible parking, entrances and a drop-off area are available. Inside, the Cafe sells lunch items and snacks. Panorama is a full-service restaurant, and reservations are available. Neither official dining description confirms a children’s menu.

Parents should set a small goal, such as one gallery plus an Activity Card. The museum asks adults to supervise children under 12, keep hands off the art and limit food and drinks to approved dining and outdoor areas.
