Kubota Garden

Kubota Garden is a free 20-acre landscape where families can slow down and explore hills, valleys, streams, waterfalls, ponds, bridges, rocks, lawns, and dense plantings. Japanese garden ideas are blended with plants from the Pacific Northwest. For children, the appeal comes from moving through the landscape and discovering what is around each bend.

This is a garden walk rather than a playground, so families should set expectations before arriving.

A typical visit lasts one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half hours. Young children can search for bridges, reflections, leaves, and moving water, while older children may notice how paths, stones, and plants shape each view. A self-guided map is available near the kiosk and marks easier and more challenging routes.

Parents must keep children out of planted beds and ponds and supervise them on the garden's steeper grades.

Stroller access is limited. Primary paths use hard-packed gravel, and every route includes some grade change. The Mountainside section is not wheelchair accessible.

Families using a stroller should choose the map's easier paths and expect to skip steeper sections. The garden has modern ADA-compliant, gender-neutral restrooms with flushing toilets and hand-washing stations near the entrance. Portable toilets are also available.

Nursing spaces and changing tables are not described.

Admission, parking, and self-guided entry are free, and no reservation is required. The garden is open from sunrise to sunset, while parking lot gates operate from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The foundation currently displays a parking alert connected to street construction on 55th Avenue S.

The notice originally anticipated work through summer 2026, so check it again before driving rather than assuming all street spaces have returned. The No. 106 bus stops on Renton Avenue S in front of the garden, and families can connect from Rainier Beach light-rail station.

There is no public cafe listed, but picnics are encouraged on the lawns and accessible tables sit near the restrooms. A dry morning offers the easiest footing. Light rain can make the garden atmospheric, but there are no public indoor buildings beyond restrooms, so this is not a reliable rainy-day destination.
