The Franklin Institute

The Franklin Institute is a strong rainy-day choice for families who want several hours of active science in Center City Philadelphia. General admission covers multiple floors of exhibits, live science programming and the Fels Planetarium. Children can move through Wondrous Space, investigate the human body around the Giant Heart, test ideas in Your Brain and SportsZone, or experiment with falling objects, chain reactions and optical illusions in Sir Isaac's Loft.

A LEGO brick pop-up, machines and daily demonstrations add shorter activities for children who do not want to read every label.

Most families should plan three to five hours. The museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with listed holiday closures. Weekdays before 2 p.m. bring more school and group visits, so the museum recommends coming after 2 p.m. for a more relaxed weekday experience. That leaves about three hours before closing. Families wanting a full day may prefer opening time on weekends.

Current general-admission prices are $29 for adults, $25 for teens and $23 for children. Two adult and two child tickets total $104 before service fees, food or special exhibitions. The museum garage costs $25 per vehicle and has limited first-come parking, bringing that sample total to $129.

Public transit can reduce both cost and parking stress. Advance tickets secure a preferred time and help families avoid buying admission after arrival.

Strollers are welcome, but large toddler carriers, double strollers and jogging strollers are not recommended inside special-exhibition galleries. The official pages reviewed do not identify nursing or changing rooms, so contact Guest Services if those facilities are essential.

Families can buy food at The Eatery or Café, or bring their own food for designated areas. Same-day re-entry is allowed with the admission wristband. This flexibility helps with younger children who need a quieter meal or outdoor break.

Preschoolers will enjoy the large moving and building activities, while elementary-age children, tweens and teens can dig into space, anatomy, physics and live demonstrations.
