Families enter at the landmark Main Building on Benjamin Franklin Parkway, above the famous front steps. Because the collection is large, younger visitors usually do better with a short list of must-see areas rather than a full-building tour.

This is a strong rainy-day choice. All floors are accessible by elevator, seating is available throughout the building, and every restroom has a baby-changing station. The official site does not clearly confirm a private nursing room or a current stroller policy, so families who need either detail should contact visitor services.

A stroller may also be less convenient in crowded galleries or around special programs.

Allow two to four hours for older children, or about 90 minutes for a focused visit with preschoolers. The on-site fast-casual Café and Balcony Café are described as family-friendly, and other choices include Stir and Ellis Coffee Bar. No food or drink is allowed in galleries.

Driving families should budget for parking. The official garage rate is $9 per hour, although validated Friday parking from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM is currently $10 total.
