Elfreth's Alley Museum

Elfreth's Alley Museum turns one short residential street into a lesson about everyday Philadelphia life. The alley dates to 1703, and its early American houses were built between 1720 and 1836. Most remain private homes.

Houses 124 and 126 form the museum, which focuses on the artisans, laborers and other working people who lived nearby. That everyday-life angle can be easier for children to understand than a story centered only on famous leaders.

Families can walk the public alley for free at any time, but museum-house access is seasonal. For the 2026 season, the museum is open Friday-Sunday from noon to 4:00 PM, generally from April to mid-November. Museum admission costs $3 for adults, $2 for children ages 7 to 12 and nothing for children under 7.

Two adults and two children in the child-price range total $10. Tickets are sold in person using cash, card or Apple Pay.

A guided tour leaves at 2:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. It lasts about 40 minutes, follows the full length of the alley and includes Bladen's Court plus admission to both museum houses. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 7 to 12, making the same family-of-four visit $30.

Families who prefer their own pace can buy a $3 smartphone audio tour with ten tracks and about 20 minutes of narration.

This visit mixes indoor historic houses with an outdoor street, so weather affects the experience. Bring a charged phone, headphones and walking shoes. Parking is not available on the alley; the museum's official event guidance points visitors to neighborhood street parking and nearby garages.

Regular restroom facilities, stroller access inside the historic houses, changing facilities and nursing space were not verified, so handle those needs before arrival.

The alley is still a residential community. Children should understand that most stoops, doors and windows belong to people's homes. A quiet, respectful walk protects the experience for families and residents alike.
