Intrepid Museum

Intrepid Museum puts families on a real aircraft carrier at Pier 86, then adds aircraft, a space shuttle and a Cold War submarine. General admission covers the carrier Intrepid, the Space Shuttle Pavilion, submarine Growler and temporary exhibitions. The Concorde can be viewed from outside, but entering it requires a separate guided tour.

Children who need something more active than exhibit labels should head to Exploreum Hall. This included family area lets visitors climb into a Bell 47 helicopter, navigate an interactive submarine and control airplane wings.

The museum recommends two to three hours. Ages 5 to 14 are the strongest fit because children can connect the machines with the history and handle the ship's stairs and long passages. Toddlers may enjoy Exploreum and the large aircraft, but infants receive little direct engagement.

Growler has a firm 40-inch minimum height. Its interior is narrow, every visitor must pass through a replica hatch without help and strollers or large bags cannot enter.

Most galleries are indoors, so the museum works on a rainy day. The pier and flight deck are outdoors, however, and wind, heat or rain still matter. Elevators and family restrooms are available across the complex.

Most restrooms have baby-changing tables, and a nursing room is available through the information desk. Strollers are allowed in much of the museum but must remain with the family because there is no bag, coat or stroller check.

Current general admission is $38 for adults and $28 for children ages 5 to 12; ages 4 and younger enter free. A two-adult, two-child family pays $132 before food or optional experiences. The museum has no visitor parking lot and does not validate nearby garages. Public transportation avoids that cost, but the west-side location can require a walk or crosstown bus connection.

Online tickets are tied to a specific date and 30-minute arrival window. Bring identification matching the purchaser and open the live digital wallet before reaching the scanner. Saved screenshots will not work because the QR codes refresh.

Once inside, consider Growler first. Its line may become long or close early. Check the official visitor page on the morning of the trip because special events can close the flight deck, Space Shuttle Pavilion or hands-on areas early.
