Essex County Turtle Back Zoo

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo is a compact, mixed indoor and outdoor zoo in West Orange, New Jersey, about 15 miles from New York City. The zoo says families typically spend two to two and a half hours here, which makes it more manageable than a full-day city zoo. More than 130 species are spread among habitats and smaller attractions, so children can see a broad mix of animals without walking all day.

The zoo is especially strong for children ages 2 through 12. Younger visitors can use the Prehistoric Playground, which is intended for ages 2 to 5 and includes large dinosaur figures and climbing structures. The miniature zoo train runs for about eight to ten minutes when operating and gives riders a different view of the giraffe area.

Keeper talks are included with admission and explain animal diets, behavior, and enrichment. Some feeds, pony rides, the butterfly tent, face painting, or special programs may be seasonal or cost extra, so check the day's attraction status before making promises.

This is mainly an outdoor visit, but it can still work on a wet day. The zoo is open rain, snow, or shine and does not issue weather refunds. Indoor areas include the Reptile House, Touch Tank, Penguin House, Sea Turtle Recovery, Essex Farm, and Animal Wellness Center. Families should still bring weather-ready clothing because moving between those buildings requires outdoor walking.

Strollers are useful but come with limits. Families may bring their own, and rentals are sometimes available, but rentals close seasonally and some exhibits require stroller parking. Free parking is available in lots and garages around the South Mountain Recreation Complex. On crowded days, staff may direct cars to an off-site lot, creating extra arrival time.

Regular admission is $22 for ages 13 and older, $19 for ages 2 through 12, and free under age 2. A typical family with two adults and two children pays $82 before food or add-ons. The zoo does not require reservations, but ticket purchases are final, there is no re-entry, and weather does not qualify for a refund.

Savanna Café sells familiar family foods, while outside food and picnics are also allowed.
