About
The Bronx Zoo is not just the largest urban zoo in the United States — it's a full-day experience that regularly surprises even New Yorkers who grew up visiting it. Spread across 265 acres in the Bronx, it houses over 6,000 animals across 700+ species, and the exhibits are designed with enough naturalistic space that you see animals behaving like animals rather than performing for visitors.
For families, the planning challenge is prioritization. You cannot see everything in one day without someone melting down — the zoo is simply too large. The most kid-loved exhibits are: Congo Gorilla Forest (an immersive rainforest habitat where you watch lowland gorillas through floor-to-ceiling glass — genuinely breathtaking), Tiger Mountain (outdoor habitat where Amur tigers pace and swim with nothing but a subtle barrier between them and the path), and the Children's Zoo section where kids under 8 can touch barnyard animals and crawl through animal-perspective tunnels.
The Butterfly Garden is worth the small separate fee: you walk into a greenhouse filled with hundreds of live tropical butterflies that land on your clothes and hair. Kids who are skeptical going in emerge completely converted.
Wednesdays offer pay-what-you-wish admission for the general grounds — it's busier than other weekdays as a result, but it's one of the only ways to experience a world-class zoo for essentially free. Some add-on experiences like the Congo Gorilla Forest, Bug Carousel, and 4-D theater have separate entry fees even on Wednesdays.
Bring food. The zoo allows outside food, has shaded picnic areas throughout, and zoo cafe prices are steep. A family of 4 eating all meals on-site can easily spend $60-$70 on food alone. Pack sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of water, especially in summer.
Parking is $20 in the zoo lot or you can street-park along Southern Blvd. The 2 and 5 subway trains stop at E 180 St, a 10-minute walk from the Bronxdale Gate.

Why Kids Love It
The Congo Gorilla Forest puts you in an immersive rainforest environment where you watch lowland gorillas from just a few feet away through floor-to-ceiling glass — a 6-year-old pressing their nose to the glass as a gorilla does the same from the other side is a memory that outlasts any screen time. Tiger Mountain's outdoor habitat has Amur tigers that pace and swim in a naturalistic setting that makes zoo tigers actually look powerful and wild. The children's zoo section has goats, sheep, and prairie dogs that little ones can interact with directly.
Pro Tips from Parents
- The zoo is massive (265 acres) — download the app or grab a paper map at the gate and plan a route before you start walking.
- Come Wednesday for 'pay-what-you-wish' grounds admission — a significant savings for large families.
- Pack lunch in a backpack cooler; the zoo allows outside food and the picnic areas near the African Plains section are shaded.
- The Congo Gorilla Forest and Bug Carousel have separate admission fees even for WCS members.
- Rent a stroller at the gate if your toddler can't walk 265 acres; the rental cost is worth it.
