Mill City Museum

Mill City Museum turns Minneapolis flour-milling history into a hands-on family outing inside the ruins of the Washburn A Mill. Children are not limited to reading wall panels. They can trace wheat from farm to market, inspect 19th-century milling equipment, sit at a harvest-crew dining table, design a cereal box, and experiment with water power.

The signature Flour Tower is a giant elevator experience that travels through eight levels of the building. Historic images, worker stories, lighting, sound, and special effects recreate the mill in operation. Families receive a time-specific Flour Tower reservation at the ticket and information desk, so request a time soon after arriving.

The show includes a loud explosion sound, low lighting, and other strong sensory effects. Earplugs are available at the front desk, and staff can help locate a quiet space.

Other highlights allow children to choose their level of activity. The Water Lab uses interactive water to explain how St. Anthony Falls powered logging and flour milling.

The Baking Lab offers exhibits, demonstrations, and occasional samples. Minneapolis in 19 Minutes Flat provides a short, humorous film about the city's history. The rooftop observation deck overlooks the Mississippi River, St.

Anthony Falls, Stone Arch Bridge, and Mill Ruins Park. The deck and Ruin Courtyard are weather dependent, but most of the museum is indoors and works well on a rainy or cold day.

The museum recommends at least two hours. Tickets are purchased on site rather than online. Regular admission is $15 for adults, $8 for ages 5 to 17, and free for children 4 and under.

Several discount and free-admission programs are listed on the official page. The museum is wheelchair accessible, has elevators, and provides changing stations plus family and accessible restrooms. It does not supply strollers, and a nursing room was not confirmed.

Bushel & Peck café inside the museum serves sandwiches, salads, snacks, drinks, and children's meals, although it closes before the museum. Driving requires planning because the museum has no parking lot or ramp and does not validate parking. Nearby city ramps and meters are available, but prices rise during U.S. Bank Stadium and Guthrie Theater events.
