About

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in St. Paul is one of those rare family destinations that's completely free. Technically it's donation-based with a suggested $3 per person, but no one's turned away if you can't pay. For a free attraction, the quality is shockingly good.

The zoo section is compact but well-done. The polar bear exhibit is the headliner — the underwater viewing window lets kids watch the bears swim, and it's genuinely captivating. There's also a primate house, big cats, giraffes, and smaller animal exhibits. It's not the Minnesota Zoo in terms of size, but for young kids, the smaller scale is actually better.

The Sparky the Sea Lion show runs a few times daily in warmer months and it's a crowd favorite. Check the schedule when you arrive. The show is entertaining, educational, and free.

The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is the other big draw. It's a series of connected greenhouses with tropical plants, a sunken garden with koi fish, a fern room, and seasonal flower shows. In the middle of a Minnesota winter, walking into the warm, humid conservatory feels like teleporting to the tropics. Kids love the koi pond.

The Japanese Garden outside is worth a walk if the weather's nice. It's one of the better Japanese gardens in the Midwest.

Parking is free. Paths are paved and stroller-friendly. Restrooms and changing stations available.

Taste of Como cafe sells sandwiches and hot dogs. For better food, head to Grand Ave in St. Paul (10 min). Even weekend crowds are manageable since the park is spread out. This is easily a 2-3 hour visit and one of the best-value family outings in the Twin Cities.
