Retzer Nature Center

Retzer Nature Center is a free, flexible nature outing on 483 acres in Waukesha. Families can move through prairie, woodland, wetland, garden, and wildlife areas without paying an entrance or parking fee. The grounds work for a quick outdoor reset or a longer hiking day, and the separate Environmental Learning Center hosts educational programs and other activities.

The best starting point with younger children is the Discovery Trail. Waukesha County describes it as a route with exploration stations for outdoor education, sensory play, and STEM activities. The official map adds useful detail: children can look for animal tracks, investigate insects and nests, explore wood and habitat stations, scramble on boulders, use a free-play area, and cross a boardwalk.

A picnic area, restrooms, drinking water, parking, and wildlife-viewing points are also marked.

Families using a stroller or mobility device should choose their route carefully. The map identifies a 0.25-mile accessible trail made of pavement and boardwalk with slopes of 5 percent or less. It is an out-and-back path, not a loop, and snow is not removed.

Conditions on the longer trails are not described as stroller-ready, so stroller access is limited rather than sitewide. Other marked loops range from 0.47 mile to 2.6 miles, making it possible to match the walk to a child’s energy.

Trail access is listed from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily. The office has shorter hours: weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and closed Sunday and county-observed federal holidays. The gift shop closes 15 minutes before the office. Families visiting outside office hours should be ready for a more self-directed outing.

This is primarily an outdoor destination, so rain, snow, heat, mud, insects, and trail conditions can change the experience. Bring water and suitable shoes, and download the trail map before leaving home. General entry and parking are free, but programs and rentals may carry separate charges. Dogs are not permitted, except leashed service dogs.
