About
Rainforest Life at ZSL London Zoo is one of the most immersive exhibits in the UK. The indoor, climate-controlled environment recreates a tropical rainforest complete with dense foliage, ambient sounds, and free-roaming animals that occupy the same space as visitors.
Common marmosets, Goeldi's monkeys, two-toed sloths, and various bird species move through the exhibit without barriers, meaning encounters are unpredictable and often surprisingly close. Children who are old enough to appreciate the difference between a cage and a free-roaming encounter tend to find this genuinely exciting — a sloth hanging directly overhead or a marmoset perched at eye level creates memories that a traditional zoo exhibit rarely does.
The exhibit also includes a nocturnal section — Nightlife — where dimmed lighting and adjusted day/night cycles allow normally nocturnal animals to be active during visiting hours. This transition from bright tropical forest to dim nocturnal zone is a fascinating sensory shift for children and adults alike.
Because the space is enclosed and animals move freely, it does get warm and can feel crowded on peak days. Visiting first thing in the morning or during a quieter period gives children the best chance of meaningful animal encounters. The exhibit is stroller-accessible though narrow in places — a baby carrier can be easier for parents with infants.

Why Kids Love It
Rainforest Life is a walk-through tropical exhibit where animals like marmosets and sloths move freely overhead and around you — there are no barriers between visitors and many of the animals. Spotting creatures hidden among the foliage turns the whole thing into an immersive wildlife treasure hunt. The nocturnal section adds a completely different sensory dimension.
Pro Tips from Parents
- Visit as soon as the zoo opens — the free-roaming animals are more active and the space is less crowded
- Look up, not just forward — sloths and monkeys are often overhead rather than at eye level
- The nocturnal section requires eyes to adjust — pause at the entrance before walking through
What to Bring
- A layer you can remove — the tropical section is warm
- Quiet voices — animals in free-roaming exhibits respond better to calm visitors
- A camera with a decent low-light mode for the nocturnal section
