Hertfordshire Zoo

Hertfordshire Zoo is designed as a full family day rather than a quick animal walk. The zoo cares for more than 800 animals, including big cats, primates, reptiles, birds, small mammals, and farmyard species. Glass viewing panels and raised platforms help children see into habitats, while keeper talks and feeding sessions add a clear reason to slow down and listen.

The day extends well beyond live animals. World of Dinosaurs adds life-size prehistoric displays, several play areas let children climb, slide, bounce, and run, and the Rex Express carries families through the dinosaur area. The train costs £2 per person and runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in winter and until 5:00 PM in summer.

Families should also check the current talks and entertainment schedule because activities change during school holidays and peak periods.

Most of the visit involves outdoor walking, so the zoo is not an ideal wet-weather fallback. There are indoor animal spaces, restaurants, Tumble Jungle, covered picnic tents, and other sheltered areas, but families still need rain gear or sun protection. The site has mostly level paths, glass viewing at different heights, adapted play equipment, and ramp access at selected exhibits.

Single and double strollers can be hired from the Welcome Centre. Baby-changing facilities are located in the car park toilet block, the centre of the zoo, and Tumble Jungle. A separate room is available for private baby feeding.

Food is easy to find. The zoo lists several outlets, children's meal boxes, hot meals, sandwiches, baked goods, snacks, and drinks. Families can also use the covered picnic areas. The zoo is cashless.

Online booking reduces both cost and arrival risk. Current prices vary by season and day. Two adults and two children ages 2 to 15 cost between £86.

Gate tickets cost an additional 10%, and displayed online prices include an optional 10% donation. Parking is free, but overflow parking across the road is used when busy. The nearest rail station is Broxbourne, about 10 minutes away by car, and the zoo recommends arranging a return taxi because public transport does not serve the entrance directly.
