About

Discover Children's Story Centre is a purpose-built place for children ages 0 to 11 to play with language, books, and imagination. Standard entry includes two floors of Story Worlds and the Story Garden. These are creative play spaces rather than quiet display galleries.

Children can invent characters, build their own tales, follow prompts from Hootah the space alien, sing, make things, and join Story Builders who appear during the day with songs and pop-up stories. Themed immersive exhibitions change annually and bring the work of children's authors and illustrators into a walk-through experience.

Babies and toddlers have a dedicated Sensory Story Space for ages 0 to 2. It is included with entry, but its 45-minute sessions should be reserved. Older siblings cannot use the main baby play area, although a small craft space is provided for them.

Families with mixed ages can also add bookable storytelling, author events, or exhibitions. These add-ons currently cost £3-£5. 50 and may have recommended ages.

Latecomers are not admitted to timed events, so allow arrival time even though general Story World entry can begin at any point between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Standard Day Entry is £10 per adult or child, making a four-person visit £40 before add-ons. Newham residents and eligible concession visitors pay £9. Advance booking is recommended. Rainy days are the busiest, while term-time Tuesdays through Thursdays are quietest. Fridays have no school groups, and Sunday afternoons are generally calmer than other weekend periods.

Buggy access is limited. Storage is available in the basement or garden, but many play spaces do not permit buggies, so the centre recommends a sling for pre-walkers. Baby-changing toilets are available on all main floors, although a dedicated nursing room was not confirmed.

The ground-floor café and occasional garden snack shack provide food, and families may bring a picnic. Most play is indoors and the building is air-conditioned, making this a strong rainy-day option, while the garden adds outdoor time when weather allows.

Best Time to Visit

Term-time Tuesdays through Thursdays are the quietest. Fridays are reserved for family visitors rather than school groups. Sunday afternoons are generally quieter than Saturdays, while rainy days are the busiest.

Wait Times

No fixed queue time is published. Advance booking is recommended, especially on rainy days, weekends, and school holidays. Arrive early for timed add-ons because latecomers are not admitted.

Nearby Food

Discover has a ground-floor café. A garden coffee-and-snack shack opens on busier days. Families may also bring food and use the day's indoor or garden picnic space, but food is not allowed in Story Worlds or events.

Why Kids Love It

Children invent stories across two floors of imaginative play spaces, explore a Story Garden, join songs and pop-up tales with Story Builders, and enter book-inspired exhibitions. Babies and toddlers have a timed sensory story space.

Pro Tips from Parents

  • Book the free 45-minute Baby and Toddler Sensory Story Space when reserving entry because sessions are timed.
  • Bring a sling for a pre-walker. Many play spaces do not allow buggies, although basement or garden storage is available.
  • Keep the wristband if you leave for a meal or break because same-day reentry is allowed until 5:00 PM.
  • Choose a term-time Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday for the quietest visit. Pick Friday if you prefer a day without school groups.

What to Bring

  • Booking confirmation
  • A baby sling or carrier if needed
  • Socks and comfortable play clothes
