Museu do Oriente

Museu do Oriente is an indoor museum on Lisbon's riverfront in Alcântara. Its displays connect Portugal with countries and cultures across Asia. This is a looking, talking and story-based museum during a normal visit, with more hands-on activity available through scheduled baby, child and family workshops.

The permanent collection Presença Portuguesa na Ásia includes furniture, textiles, sculpture, porcelain and art from places including India, Sri Lanka, China, Macau, Japan, Korea and Timor-Leste. The Kwok On collection contains more than 15,000 objects linked to Asian performance, stories, religion and ritual. Masks, puppets, costumes, instruments and painted figures give children concrete things to search for.

The museum's education program also offers games, workshops and dramatized sessions. Current activity pages include programs for babies from 12 to 36 months as well as children and families, but each event has its own booking rules and price.

Ages 5 to 12 are the strongest fit for combining gallery observation with a workshop. Toddlers may enjoy a short visit or a program made for their age. Older children and teens interested in art, theater, travel or world history can spend longer with the collections. Allow roughly 90 minutes to two and a half hours, plus workshop time.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with longer Friday hours. Friday admission is free from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and the €22 family ticket covers two adults with up to three people under 18. Children through age 5 enter free. Exhibition entry stops 30 minutes before closing.

Wheelchair routes, ramps and elevators serve the exhibition floors. Adapted toilets are listed on floors 5 and -1, and portable stools and a wheelchair are available. The official sources don't state a stroller, nursing-room or baby-changing policy, so call before visiting if those details affect your day.

A public restaurant is on the fifth floor, though children's menu choices weren't confirmed.
