Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum reopened on July 18, 2026, after a year and a half of renovation. Its galleries now show about 1,000 pieces from a collection of roughly 6,000 works. Families move through more than 5,000 years of art, beginning with Ancient Egypt and continuing through Greece, Rome, the Islamic world, Armenia, China, Japan and Europe.

The route ends with René Lalique jewelry and glass. This wide range helps children choose a subject they already care about instead of treating the visit like one long painting lesson.

A good family plan is to pick two or three targets. Children may look for the Egyptian sarcophagus, compare animals on old objects, inspect Greek coins in the newly opened Numismatics Cabinet or find materials that shine in the Lalique room. Older children can connect artists such as Rembrandt, Monet and Degas with school history.

The museum also publishes a free digital guide and runs family activities, tours and workshops, though schedules and age limits change. Check the official agenda before promising a particular program.

The museum is indoors and works well in wet or hot weather. The surrounding Gulbenkian Garden is free and gives children room for a quieter break when conditions are good. The Foundation states that its buildings and parts of the garden have access for visitors with limited mobility, including ramps, lifts and accessible toilets.

It does not publish a clear stroller policy, nursing-room location or baby-changing-room statement. Free cloakrooms and lockers are available during museum hours.

Standard Museum admission is €16 and includes the CAM Collection. Visitors under 18 enter free, so a family with two adults and two children would pay €32 before food or activities. Admission is free for everyone on Sundays after 2:00 PM.

The museum opens Wednesday through Monday, stays open until 9:00 PM on Saturday and closes Tuesday. Several cafés and restaurants operate across the Foundation grounds, including a museum cafeteria with Portuguese-style meals and confirmed vegetarian choices. No children's menu was found on the official pages.
