Jardim Botânico de Lisboa

Jardim Botânico de Lisboa is a four-hectare scientific garden connected to the National Museum of Natural History and Science, or MUHNAC. The University of Lisbon says its collection holds roughly 1,300 to 1,500 species. Families can look for large old trees, palms from several continents and cycads, an ancient plant group that can feel like a link to the age of dinosaurs.

Plants from New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan and South America grow in different parts of the garden.

This is a walking and observation outing, not a playground. Children can compare leaf shapes, count kinds of palms, sketch a favorite tree or photograph unusual textures. Ages 4 to 12 are the clearest fit when adults turn the walk into a simple search game.

Babies and toddlers can come, but the university specifically describes the garden's slopes and varied topography. No official stroller policy was found, so a child carrier is a useful backup.

Plan one to two hours for an ordinary family visit. The garden is outdoors, and rain or strong heat will affect the experience. From April 1 through October 31, it is open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. From November 1 through March 31, daily hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. These garden hours differ from the museum exhibition and café schedule. Check both if you want to combine them.

The garden requires paid admission, but the current official pages reviewed do not publish a complete regular tariff. That makes a reliable family-of-four estimate unavailable. Check with MUHNAC or the University of Lisbon before traveling rather than depending on a third-party price.

Official 2026 pages show that the garden also hosts guided walks with its gardeners and family science activities. Those programs have their own dates, capacity limits and registration rules. The entrance address is Rua da Escola Politécnica 54 in central Lisbon. Bring water, sun protection and shoes that handle sloping paths. Nursing space, changing tables, a venue phone number and children's meal options were not confirmed by the official sources reviewed.
