Carmo Archaeological Museum

Carmo Archaeological Museum occupies the roofless remains of a Gothic church begun in 1389. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake and later fire badly damaged the building, and reconstruction stopped in the 1800s. Today, families walk beneath open arches before entering spaces filled with stonework, tombs, tiles and archaeological objects.

The collection includes Roman inscriptions, Pre-Columbian ceramics and mummies, an Egyptian sarcophagus and finds from a prehistoric settlement at Vila Nova de São Pedro.

This is a compact history stop, not a hands-on children's museum. It works best for school-age children who like ruins, ancient objects or slightly spooky displays. Younger children may enjoy the open church and mummies, but there are few reasons for a toddler to linger.

Plan 60-90 minutes. The museum's guided visits average about 30 minutes, and a 12-minute video-mapping presentation is also described by the education program. Ask at reception what is available that day.

From May through October, the museum opens Monday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with last entry at 6:40 PM. From November through April it closes at 6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:40 PM. It is closed Sundays plus January 1, May 1 and December 25.

Two adults with two children age 14 or younger pay €14 total: €7 + €7 + free + free. Bring documentation for student, resident or accessibility discounts.

The official site says all public areas and entrances are wheelchair accessible. An accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities are available. It does not publish a stroller policy, so families bringing one should contact the museum first. Food and drinks are prohibited inside.

Because the main nave is open to the sky, this is not a fully weatherproof museum. Sun and heat matter in summer, while steady rain can reduce the appeal of the ruins. Pair it with another nearby indoor stop if the forecast is uncertain, and check the official site for current prices or schedule changes.
