Origen Museum

The Origen Museum at Springs Preserve is one of Las Vegas's hidden gems for family outings — a thoughtfully designed natural history museum focused specifically on the Mojave Desert ecosystem, the history of water in the Las Vegas Valley, and how one of the world's most unlikely cities came to exist in the middle of a desert.

For kids, the exhibits land because they explain something directly relatable to where they live or are visiting. The water section — tracing how the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and the Southern Nevada Water Authority make the city's existence possible — is fascinating in the context of Las Vegas. Kids understand that Las Vegas gets essentially no rain, and seeing how the city solved that problem at a scale of millions of people is genuinely engaging.

Note that Origen Museum and Springs Preserve are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The outdoor areas are best in the morning before desert heat peaks; if visiting in summer, front-load your time with the outdoor sections before retreating to the museum's air conditioning.
