Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City preserves locomotives, passenger equipment, motor cars, models, photographs, and objects connected with Nevada railroading. It is a focused museum rather than a full-day theme park, making it manageable as a half-day outing or a weather backup.

Children can see historic Virginia & Truckee locomotives such as the Genoa and J.W. Rides are not daily and are not included with museum admission. The museum is open Thursday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is closed Tuesday, Wednesday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. General admission is $10 for adults and free for children age 17 and younger and museum members. A family of two adults and two children therefore pays $20 before optional rides or store purchases.

Plan about 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on interest and whether a ride is running. Indoor exhibit areas make the museum useful in poor weather, but the operating equipment and part of the collection are outside. Rain or wind can reduce the outdoor portion.
