National Automobile Museum

The National Automobile Museum is a large indoor museum in downtown Reno, making it a regional day trip for families staying near Lake Tahoe. The collection includes more than 225 cars arranged through galleries and historic street scenes. Children can see how vehicles, clothing, storefronts, and technology changed together.

The museum also has theater presentations, an antique car horn to try, and a photo car with period clothing pieces.

The strongest family feature is the 3,000-square-foot E.L. Wiegand Children's Educational Activity Center. Its five sections offer more than screens and labels.

Children can use a simulated car wash, create a vehicle in the design studio, test how weight and size affect a race car, steer through a virtual Reno course with body movements, and examine a scaled automobile. A workshop with ropes, pulleys, blocks, and other materials adds an engineering challenge. These activities make the museum especially useful for ages 4 to 14, while teens and adults may spend more time with the historic cars.

Plan two to three hours if your family wants both the collection and activity center. A focused visit can be shorter. The museum is self-guided, but a roughly 90-minute guided tour is normally offered at 1:30 p.m. based on volunteer availability. The museum asks visitors to call before depending on that tour.

General admission is $16 for adults, $13 for ages 6 to 17, and $3 for children age 5 and younger. A family with two adults and two school-age children would pay $58. Parking is free.

Weekday hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; weekend hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Because the experience is indoors, it is a strong option during rain, snow, heat, or smoke. Check the official visit page before making the drive because prices, hours, and exhibits can change.
