Loose Park

Loose Park is the gold standard for free family parks in Kansas City. Stretching across 75 acres near Wornall Road, it earns a 4.8 Google rating because it genuinely delivers something for every member of the family — from infants in strollers to teens who just want to throw a frisbee and be outside.

The rose garden is the park's crown jewel. Donated to KC Parks by Jacob Loose's widow in 1927, it blooms spectacularly from late May through June with hundreds of rose varieties. Kids who have never been impressed by a garden actually slow down here — the scale and color are hard to ignore. Plan a late spring visit if you can.

The duck pond draws an automatic crowd. Whether it's a 2-year-old who has never seen a duck up close or a 10-year-old who's been coming since toddlerhood, the pond is a guaranteed stop on every Loose Park visit. Bring something to feed the ducks and build in extra time.

The playground section is well-maintained and shaded better than most KC parks. Open fields make it ideal for kite flying, soccer, or general running. The park's layout handles large crowds gracefully — even on a packed Saturday morning, it never feels genuinely overwhelming.

A few practical notes: weekend morning parking fills up fast. Aim for 8:30AM on Saturdays if you want a good spot. There are restroom facilities in the park. No food vendors on-site, but packing a picnic here is one of the great Kansas City family traditions — and it costs nothing.
