African American Museum, Dallas

The African American Museum, Dallas is an indoor art and history museum at Historic Fair Park. Its collections cover African American art, artifacts, archives and cultural history. The strongest current family draw is Mandela: The Official Exhibition, which runs from June 13 through November 1, 2026.

Four galleries use personal objects, historical material and multimedia to follow Nelson Mandela from childhood through imprisonment, South Africa's presidency and his later legacy. The museum recommends that exhibition for ages 11 and older, though families with younger children may enter. Parents should know that some material is emotionally intense.

Tweens and teenagers who are studying civil rights, leadership, apartheid or world history are likely to get the most from it. The museum suggests 60 to 90 minutes to see all four Mandela galleries. A broader visit may take longer, depending on which permanent and changing displays are open.

Admission is free and tickets are not required. Current exhibition hours are 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday, with Sunday and Monday closed. Free parking is listed in the Fair Park lots, and the normal approach is through Gate 5.

Major events can complicate that easy arrival. Fair Park staff may use different gates, add security checks or charge for parking during the State Fair, FIFA Fan Fest or another large event. Check the museum calendar and Fair Park activity before driving over.

This is a useful hot-weather or rainy-day stop because the galleries are indoors. Food and drinks cannot enter the museum, and no bag-lunch facility is available, so children should eat before arrival. The current Mandela exhibition is fully wheelchair accessible and includes subtitled film content.

The official visitor pages do not explain stroller use, changing facilities or nursing space. The homepage also retains an old temporary-closure message even though the live 2026 exhibition page lists current dates, hours and visitor instructions. Check the official site on the day of the visit for any closure notice or schedule change.
