Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum works especially well for families who need both active play and close-up nature. Its main exhibits are indoors, while trails and parts of the surrounding Lincoln Park setting give families an outdoor option in good weather. A rainy day can still include several hours of animals, play and science without depending on the trails.

Nature's PlaySpace is the best stop for young children. It is designed for ages 7 and under and brings six outdoor environments inside. Children can splash at a wetland water feature, crawl through an oversized beaver lodge, climb into a large bird nest and move around a treehouse.

A separate area with soft toys serves the youngest visitors. The space encourages child-led play, so toddlers and preschoolers are likely to spend longer here than families expect.

The Judy Istock Butterfly Haven is the other major draw. The 2,700-square-foot greenhouse holds more than 1,000 free-flying butterflies from over 40 species. A public butterfly release is scheduled for 2:00 PM, though daily programs can change.

Butterfly Haven is no longer part of basic admission for nonmembers. It requires a $5 add-on for each person. Strollers cannot enter the greenhouse, but parking is available near its entrance.

Basic admission currently costs $15 for an Illinois adult, $17 for an out-of-state adult, $8 for an Illinois child ages 1 to 12 and $10 for an out-of-state child. Infants under 12 months are free. A 10% service fee applies to admission purchases.

Illinois Resident Free Days, Museums for All and library pass programs can lower the cost, but families should verify dates and eligibility before traveling.

The museum is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with early access for members at 9:00 AM on Tuesdays and Sundays. It has no dedicated parking lot. Limited street parking and a nearby Chicago Park District paid lot are available, while several CTA bus routes stop nearby.

The building has a private Quiet/Lactation Room, accessible elevators and changing tables on all three levels. The store sells limited snacks, so this is easier before or after lunch than during a long meal window.
